Rex Ryan's best offseason move was placing his faith in himself during a watershed moment in his professional life.

Although Ryan has been rightfully criticized for curious decisions surrounding his quarterbacks in the past year, his defensive acumen is beyond reproach. He is football's Raymond Babbitt, a savant who has built a career flummoxing some of the best offensive minds of this generation.

Ryan has returned to his roots as a stalwart defensive play caller after a brief hiatus. Now, his defense just may save him in a make or break season.

The league landscape is littered with overreaction after the first weekend of football. The Jets made a defensive splash by shutting down the Buccaneers in an 18 17 season opening win on Sunday, but Ryan's unit will have to elevate its play to slow down the high octane Patriots on Thursday night in Foxborough.

The Jets still aren't playoff contenders, but Ryan's defense may be good enough to help win enough games to keep him around beyond 2013.

Ryan's group held Josh Freeman to a 48% completion rate and 67.9 passer rating and Pro Bowl running back Doug Martin to 2.7 yard per carry in Week 1. The confident head coach didn't indulge in hyperbole when asked Monday if that defensive success was a product of a questionable Tampa Bay offense or simply the Jets' dominance.

"You guys figure it out," Ryan said. "We'll be pretty good on defense."

The Patriots, of course, are expected to present a more daunting challenge.

Ryan's mission to stymie Tom Brady isn't impossible. It only seems that way.

TRAVERSE CITY An historic walk deserves a similar setting.

For its 30th annual walk, the Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City presents the Historic District Garden Tour through the Traverse City Central Neighborhood.

In addition to the gardens, the Perry Hannah House (now Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home) will be open to the public, showcasing three floors of the lumber baron home built in 1891 and finished in 1893. Floral arrangements donated by local florists will be on display on all floors.

All of the gardens on the 30th annual Garden Walk are located close together to allow it to be a walking tour.

The gardens have banners posted for easy identification. They may be toured in any order. at Garden No. 4.

Following is a brief description of the gardens:

This re landscaped yard has been 10 years in the making. A new garden bed had been reworked or added each year replacing the original yews on all four sides of the house.

Hydrangeas are a favorite of the homeowner. In addition to the plants and shrubs, various artifacts are for added interest. The shady backyard also features hostas surrounding the mature maple tree.

This yard is home to an informal garden of many plants including iris, peonies, azaleas, daisies, lilies and hydrangeas in addition to other shrubs and grasses.

Also in the garden are two raised vegetable beds.

The East will contend with Choctawhatchee's Lauren Day and all world guard Brittany Brown with post players Segovia Goodin (Mosley), Anissa Martin (Bay) and Aaliyah Coleman (Chipley).

The East also will contend for dominance in the post with forwards JoJo Booker (Arnold), JoJo Carlson (Ponce de Leon) and Alexis Ware (Mosley). Booker and Ware are both 1,000 point career scorers.

Wewahitchka's Jessica Smith also achieved the century mark in her career. She joins high scoring guards Ashley Harper (Ponce de Leon), Khadejah Ward (Cottondale) and Holmes County 3 point threat Mikayla Moore on the roster.

Coleman is one of three Tigers chosen to the East, which is coached by Chipley's Heather Hingson. Guards Rakeia Sorey and Jasmine Belser also represent Chipley, which finished as 1A runner up this season.

The girls series has turned into a defensive battle with the last three games decided by an average of five points. No team has scored more than 70 in the span. Nine of the first 10 teams scored more than 70 points in the first five meetings.

Players that weren't selected are still eligible to be chosen as replacements should one of the roster members be injured or otherwise pull out of the event.

An Ethiopian Airlines co pilot locked his colleague out of the cockpit, hijacked a Rome bound plane and landed Monday in Geneva, all in an attempt to seek asylum in Switzerland, officials said. (0500 GMT). Officials said no one on the flight was injured and the hijacker was taken into custody after surrendering to police.

It wasn't immediately clear why the co pilot, an Ethiopian man born in 1983 whose name wasn't released, wanted asylum. It also was unclear why he chose Switzerland which, unlike Italy, isn't a member of the 28 nation European Union and where voters recently demanded curbs on immigration.

Ethiopian Airlines is owned by Ethiopia's government, however, which has faced persistent criticism over its rights record and its alleged intolerance of political dissent.

The plane first sent a distress message while flying over Sudan's airspace on its way to Rome, Ethiopia's communications minister said.

"From Sudan all the way to Switzerland, the co pilot took control of the plane," said the minister, Redwan Hussein. He didn't elaborate but added that the pilot was Italian.

Passengers on the plane were unaware at the time that it had been hijacked, officials said.

Two Italian fighter jets were scrambled to accompany the plane, Geneva airport chief executive Robert Deillon told reporters.

The co pilot took control of the plane when the pilot ventured outside the cockpit, Deillon said.

"The pilot went to the toilet and he (the co pilot) locked himself in the cockpit," Deillon said. "(He) wanted asylum in Switzerland."

A few minutes after landing in Geneva, the co pilot left the cockpit using a rope, then went to the police forces close to the aircraft and "announced that he was himself the hijacker," Grandjean said.

Police escorted the plane's passengers out one by one, their hands over their heads, from the taxied plane to waiting vehicles. Geneva airport was closed to other flights for about two hours after the hijacked plane landed.

Geneva prosecutor Olivier Jornot said the co Pierre Desir Jersey pilot will be charged with taking hostages, a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The Swiss federal prosecutor's office will take over the investigation.

Jornot said the hijacker's chances of winning asylum were slim.

"Technically there is no connection between asylum and the fact he committed a crime to come here," he said. "But I think his chances are not very high."

The plane was scheduled to stop in Milan before its final destination in Rome. Milan bound passengers were put on buses from Geneva to the northern Italian city, while those headed for other destinations were put on alternative flights, Geneva airport spokesman Bertrand Staempfli said. The plane was still in Geneva on Monday afternoon and it wasn't clear when it would leave, he said.

The leader of Ethiopia's opposition Blue party, Yilikal Getnet, said he believes the hijacker was trying to make a statement about the political situation in Ethiopia, where the late strongman Meles Zenawi's party has dominated politics since the 1990s.

"I think he took the measure to convey a message that the . government is not in line with the public and people are not impressed by what the government says," he said.

Human Rights Watch says Ethiopia's human Christian Kirksey Youth Jersey rights record "has sharply deteriorated" over the years.
